Ever since I was a child, I loved to make people feel and look beautiful.

Blue Light, Your Skin & How to Protect It

Americans are spending 10+ average hours on our phones, tablets & computers. I’m most certainly included in that statistic. If I’m not on my computer, I’m on my phone at work and I regularly think about the effects on my skin. And maybe you’re spend less time on those devices as me, but we’re all spending time on these devices and the blue lights that they emit can have damaging results to our skin.

At this point in our lives, we’re all pretty aware of what the sun does to our skin. However, not all of us are aware that visible rays have many, many wavelengths.  According to Dermstore.com, those include: ‘red, orange, yellow, green, blue and many shades in between. Red light has a longer wavelength and therefore produces less energy; on the other end of the spectrum, blue light has a shorter wavelength (400–495) and falls within the spectrum of high energy visible (HEV) light, which means—you guessed it!—it produces more energy.’

Similar to light produced by the sun, blue light has its positives and negatives. Healthy exposure to blue light during the day can help us stay alert & even boost our moods. However at night, it can hurt our eyes, cause us to have a crappy night sleep, among other things which can certainly attribute to problematic skin.

HEV is apparently capable of penetrating deeper into the skin that traditional UV rays. It hits deep down where elastin and hyaluronic acid are produced. It may also penetrate antioxidants in the skin and increase free radicals which can often lead to premature aging. Not only that, but constant exposure to HEV rays cause actually contribute to dark spots & hyperpigmentation.

As more and more of us partake in regular technology use, our exposure to blue light only increases. And even worse, the closer the device to our skin the greater chance of wrinkles, saggy, loose skin and dark spots.

However, we’re not totally helpless in this situation. Cheeky has researched 2 promising ways & product lines that we can consider to protect our skin on a deeper level.

Top Choice – Heliocare

I have been taking Heliocare for the last month and a half and I cannot tell you how it has helped my sunspots and dark spots stay at bay. In fact, I’m rather surprised. I guess I can also say that I’ve noticed my skin is really glowing. Hmmm.. just thinking about that now.

In short, ‘Heliocare is a simple, one-a-day dietary supplement made with Fernblock® Polypodium leucotomos extract (PLE). This natural extract is packed with antioxidant properties that help maintain your skin’s ability to protect itself against the aging effects of free radicals.’ – Heliocare

Sunscreen doesn’t filter out the free radicals from sources like pollution, smoke, infrared rays & you got it, HEV rays – blue light!

While an antioxidant can benefit all us Cheeky’s, regardless of skin type or age, it’s especially important for those with sun allergies, vitiligo, and melasma. (I’ve got sun allergies & melasma) These supplements make us less sensitive to UV & HEV light and works around the clock to protect us.

SkinMedica’s LUMIVIVE™ System

The new system includes two specific formulas: the LUMIVIVE™ DAY Damage Defense Serum (a protective day serum) and the LUMIVIVE™ NIGHT Revitalize Repair Complex (a reparative night serum). Together, this duo works together to not only help the skin repair itself, but most importantly, can protect your skin from constant environmental stressors – like pollution, smoke, UV rays, HEV rays and all sorts of free radicals that hit us on the regular.

The DAY Damage Defense Serum, which boasts cocoa extract, alteromonas ferment extract (which I think is deep sea algae) and bioflavonoids which work to create a barrier on your skin, thus protecting your skin against sun damage caused by blue light, pollution & the ozone.

The NIGHT Revitalize Repair Complex works to detoxify the skin & boasts a powerhouse of ingredients to protect your cells, re-energize them, recharge & reinvigorate the skin.

When used as directed….

In a 12-week clinical study on 300 patients in two of the most polluted cities in the world (New Delhi and Beijing), results showed improvement in the overall radiance, visible redness and appearance of skin discoloration in just eight weeks. These findings indicate that even in the most polluted environments, the LUMIVIVE™ System can help protect skin from pollution-induced damage and reverse signs of existing damage.
