Mosquitos are the only living thing I will squash on purpose – everybody else gets evicted from my premises via a plastic container, paper towel, or whatever it is I’ve got on hand. And that includes all spiders, HUGE grasshoppers & the one roach that crawled in through our screen door (that no longer is used). But when it comes to mosquitos, I cannot stand those little boogers & they’re persistent as all get out. I was in Costa Rica in high school for a Spanish trip (I had the worst grade in the class & was clearly just invited to entertain folks) and I came back with 112 bug bites & my mom took me to the doctor immediately upon my return. And yes, my friends and I counted! Needless to say, they LOVE me!
I guess I’m what you call a mosquito anti-itch expert because of the sheer amount of bug bites I deal with on any given day. I have 3 on my feet as I’m typing. How about you Cheeky’s? I’m sure you’ve got them buzzing about your home, ready for you to step foot outside – or maybe inside! Either way, I think you know how annoying mosquito bites are!
#CheekyConfidential According to the New York Times, a mosquito bite itches because when the bug bites, ‘Your immune system recognizes the proteins in the mosquito’s saliva as a foreign substance and “mounts an immediate attack,” releasing histamine as part of the immune response. – It’s the histamine reaction that causes the itching. The histamine also causes your blood vessels to enlarge, creating the wheal, or swollen bump, around the bite.’
If you become victim to a mosquito bite, whether 1 or 2… or you’ve got over 100 like I did during my fun-filled Costa Rican vacation, there are plenty of remedies to use to help combat the itch and get you feeling better in no time!
- Vicks Vapor Rub
- Menthol essential oil
These two ‘cooling’ products have anti-inflammatory properties, helping to reduce pain, swelling, and itching
- Cortisone cream – Cheeky favorite!
Steroid creams like Cortisone work by constricting the blood vessels and reducing the inflammation that’s at the root of the itchiness
- Calamine lotion – Another Cheeky favorite! This used to be my go-to as a kid and would not provide immediate relief but rather lasting relief
- Benadryl or an oral histamine
There are certainly a ton of other natural remedies out there for you to consider, but as you know, I don’t like fluff or suggesting things that may not always work!
Want to avoid the itch all together? If I could drink mosquito repellents I would (please don’t drink it, only joking)! Mosquito repellent works by masking the chemical cues that welcome mosquitoes! If you’re headed to a BBQ this weekend at your friends, camping or any other fun activity – here are some considerations to look out for & some of our favorite repellents!
- If you see an EPA registration number on a product label, you know the repellent been tested for safety and effectiveness
- Don’t be scared of DEET – No other product has been tested for safety and effectiveness in repelling insects more than DEET
- Formulations containing 20 percent DEET are most effective
Lemon Euclyptus Oil – great alternative to DEET products
