Ever since I was a child, I loved to make people feel and look beautiful.

Top Reasons Your Facial Oil Isn’t Working For You (Plus, Our Favorite Oils)

This blog post was inspired by a personal experience I had lately. It wasn’t too long ago when we wrote our blog on the insane benefits of Argan oil when we discovered that were applying it ‘wrong’. Well, we followed general application tips & proper steps in the application process, BUT, we had read a new way of doing things. And it has since significantly changed how well our oil works for us, for the BETTER. I have been pleasantly surprised for the last two weeks & I want you to join the club.

Here’s the original Argan oil blog in case ya missed it!

What’s the Sitch with Argan Oil!?

Without further ado, let’s get cracking!

The skincare industry has been producing new oils left and right. And within the last 3-5 years, we’re seeing that ALL skin types are benefiting from oil usage. It used to be that the dry folks, like myself, were the only ones who would get any real gains from it. But now, with all these industry favorites at a moment’s reach, we’re bound to learn a thing or two about how to use them!

These common face oil mistakes could be exactly what’s standing in between you and glowy, perfectly hydrated & plump skin. Give these tweaks a try before you cast doubt on the oil you’ve been ‘testing’ out.

You’re applying in the ‘wrong’ order

I thought I’d start with my favorite… this is where I saw the biggest improvement. The first thing we should consider is to apply our oil AFTER we apply our moisturizer. For the longest time, I’ve been applying my oil before my moisturizer so it would have the best chance of soaking into the skin. Many industry leaders recommend this so we’ve followed suit, until recently. When you apply the oil AFTER your moisturizer, it’s going to actually LOCK in the moisture. Think of ‘occlusive’ which we wrote about this week and last. Read those blogs too should you be interested in how occlusive skincare can rock your world!

I did read that sometimes folks with oily skin benefit more from applying it BEFORE their moisturizers because it soaks into the skin much more easily, but test it out.

How Skin Occlusion Can Help Your Skin

You’re not applying it correctly

Patting your skincare is still in! When it comes to oils, you really don’t want to rub it in. You’re not only pulling at the skin, but you’re not giving the product the opportunity to really sink in. We suggest warming it up in  your hands before gently pressing onto your face until it absorbs. Or, what we love to do is pat it and then take our jade roller & go wild! Just let those oils melt into your hands & pat away.

Why We Need to Be Patting Our Skincare Products

You’re not using the right one

As we know by now, not all skincare oils are created equal. And seemingly nowadays, no 2 oils are even alike. We recommend that you first look for QUALITY. When you’re choosing between oils, don’t go for the synthetic ones like mineral oil. Go for the ones that are natural, like berries, floral, nuts, etc. that really work in cahoots with your skin. Far too many oil formulations have those undesirable synthetics hidden in them—just because it says it’s an argan oil treatment on the package doesn’t necessarily mean it’s pure.

Beyond that, while oily and acne-prone skin types can get away with using facial oils, there are still varieties that may be too heavy or pore-clogging. Argan, jojoba, tea tree (more for acne prone skin), evening primrose, and even almond oils are some of our favorite picks for folks that easily break out.
