Ever since I was a child, I loved to make people feel and look beautiful.

What You Need to Know About Fillers

Not too long ago, Cheeky was out with the Pizza Club! I am part of a pizza club here in Tucson that was originally created by my friend Elizabeth. It’s a great group of women who share their love for pizza and one another. It’s a great excuse to leave all our stressors behind and spend the night hanging out, drinking wine, sucking down way too much pizza and making sure that there is enough ranch on the table for dipping at all times. It’s a fun highlight of the month. We chatter about anything from marriage, to divorce, to kids (I don’t think many of us have them), plus things like SKINCARE! Clearly our favorite topic of the night.

One Cheeky, Megan, yelled over the booth the other pizza night inquiring about a skin ailment that’s been bothering her and our discussion got into fillers! We’ve gotten into the under eye benefits that come with fillers on the blog before but we haven’t touched upon the real benefits of fillers for other areas of the face. In fact, this topic came up again last night when I went out to dinner with my friend and her mom and the mother recently got filler for her 50th high school reunion.

It’s time to chatter! YASSS!

When I think of filler, I think of smooth skin, plump lips and full cheeks! If that’s something you’re interested in and your bod doesn’t naturally have that ‘look’ you’re trying to achieve, then dermal injectable fillers may be your thing!

#CheekyConfidential Don’t get filler right before a teeth cleaning. Oftentimes these procedures require pressure and stretching of the face that could actually misplace fillers. Wait a few days or a week between the two!

Fillers are made from hyaluronic acid

Collagen used to be a more common filler, but these days most fillers, such as Juvéderm, use hyaluronic acid. Because it’s amazing at storing moisture, hyaluronic acid is responsible for giving skin that plump, hydrated look. It’s used topically to moisturize like we’ve written about before, but a cream can’t restore lost volume that can come with maturing or maybe you’ve not had that desired volume ever before —only injectable hyaluronic acid can give you that look. Once injected it can kick butt at doing 2 main things: naturally plumps & replenishes your body’s natural production of HA thus helping you look younger.

Can help you look younger in the long run

Research suggests that HA injections may stimulate collagen production, leading to fresher-looking skin in the long run. They ‘found that in addition to filling up space, these injections induce robust production of collagen, thought to give rise to the smooth contour of the skin.’

Fillers are an art form

Just on Cheeky’s Instagram the other day, a follower said she was anxious about finding the perfect injector for her next filler session and I would have to agree with her anxieties. It is something to take very seriously. I often think that the patient tends to ‘look’ like the doctor or the estheticians in the office, so I take a good inventory of what everyone looks like. If they look super fake, I will schedule elsewhere. Always trust in a quality professional and don’t forget to ask for references or to see before & after photos – that’s standard!

Fillers are buildable overtime

My doc at Tucson Cosmetics always says that fillers are buildable overtime. And the more you get them in the same areas, the less you’ll need in the future! And not only that, if you do not achieve results with the first go-round, you can always go back and get more. The results are truly tailored to what you like! I personally find that lip fillers need to be built upon… You’ll have big old lips for the first couple weeks and then it feels like they’re gone (they’re really not)… so if you liked the size you initially had with the swelling, head back and try for another syringed for your desired look.

You can have your filler ‘removed’

If you’re unhappy with the way filler looks, don’t panic—in most cases, you can have it fixed. Your doc/esthetician might inject additional filler for balance, or she can dissolve it altogether with a super cool enzyme. WA LA! It’s not the end of the world if you come out looking a little wild, there are solutions!

Where can you get filler done

There are TONS of areas of the face where you can get filler done. Remember, this is often used to add volume to areas that lack it. So you could essentially get a nonsurgical nose job and bigger lips at the same time. It’s just defining what you’re looking to change.

What I had done…

^ Filler in the cheek area, lips and bottom of the lips to give the appearance of a fuller chin so the bottom lip looks most natural.

I think it’s ‘natural’ enough looking… but you can definitely see the skin is plumper AND looks really hydrated.

Quick Reference Guide

Price –  I would say it’s anywhere from $500 to $1500. Depending on location, amount and type of filler used. For example, for my cheeks and lip area, it was $599 for one syringe.

Duration – Filler can last anywhere from 3 months to 2 years. Ask your provider which filler would be your best bet. I received Juvéderm that should last me around a year or a little less. After about six months, the hyaluronic acid fillers are naturally broken down by the body, so you may have to get touchups once or twice a year to maintain the look.

Results – The results are immediate. Unlike Botox where you have to wait 7 to 10 days to see the results, you will see the result right away and continue to see it smooth out the skin over the next couple weeks – it’ll soften.
