As I’ve been milking/healing this never ending chest congestion, I find myself getting REALLY excited to turn on my new humidifier every night. Not only because I can actually breathe and I wake up feeling like there is a dog on my chest rather than an elephant (was that a reach?), but because my skin seems to be so much less DRY than it usually is.
While we know humidifiers, when used properly, are amazing for both your skin and sinuses/chest crap, there is another thing that comes to mind when I think of dry winter skin & how to get rid of it. That includes CERAMIDES! Ceramides are among the most worthy of opponents when it comes to battling dry skin, as far as ingredients are concerned.
According to our friends at CeraVe, ‘Ceramides make up 50% of the skin barrier! Ceramides are lipids that help form the skin’s barrier and help skin retain moisture. Ceramides also help the skin protect against environmental aggressors like irritants, and pollution. Without the proper ratio of ceramides, the skin’s barrier can become compromised, leading to dryness, itching and irritation.’
Although ceramides are produced naturally by the skin, they maybe be depleted by exposure to hot water, soaps, chemicals and DRY/COLD AIR! Replenishing the skin with products that help to restore the skin’s barrier will not only help your skin feel and look better, but you can actually achieve higher moisture levels in the skin with prolonged use. It helps to think of these ceramides as the building blocks in your skin – they play a pivotal role in maintaining long-term hydration & help strengthen the skin’s surface so it can actually protect itself from stressors like hot water & dry/cold air.
In addition, as we beautifully mature, our ceramide levels naturally decline. So not only does cold weather, hot water and soap effect our skin, we’re also seeing that our bodies make even less ceramide overtime and it seems that we can never quite catch up. Until ceramide skincare products took to the shelves. Or at least they certainly help!
Here are some of our very favorite ceramide-infused skincare products! We know a thing or two about dry skin, so take our word on these guys! They’re pretty darn good.
Winter dryness doesn’t stand a chance against the Allure, Best of Beauty-winning First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream, infused with soothing colloidal oatmeal, shea butter, and ceramide 3.
