Ever since I was a child, I loved to make people feel and look beautiful.

Why You Should Clean Your Makeup Brushes!

The other day when I was tidying up my ‘side’ of the bathroom, I first, realized how much of a shit show my side was compared to my darling husband’s side… I’m talking like… Things flying out of the dated medicine cabinet (we rent), unknown small globs of god knows what skincare products, a tweezer that has been lodged perfectly behind a crap ton of products to where your fingers aren’t working… You get the picture. And as I was brooding about the disheveled skincare scene and how back in 2013 my New Years resolution was to be more organized, I then realized I haven’t even opened up the makeup ‘area’…. We all know that it probably looks even worse. Lord help us…..

To my dismay, my brain was like, ‘Oh Colleen, just open the damn drawers and we can handle this’…. Thanks brain! So my now sticky, little, non-working fingers opened the drawers with quite a good amount of fear and it was then I realized that not only should I get my life together (makeup drawer and beyond), I really needed to clean my brushes!!!!!!!!

If the above description of the bathroom resonates with you and you’re a little more lax on your brush cleaning than maybe we should be, because let’s be honest, how on earth can we do everything we’re supposed to do,  it may be time for a little refresher on why we should take some time this long weekend to tackle those brushes!

Top Reasons to Clean Those Brushes

Bacteria

Even if you’re not a big makeup wearer and use your brushes seldomly, dirty brushes can build up with bacteria. And even worse, if you’ve got your makeup brushes in your showering area, the moist & warm environment literally becomes a petri dish that breeds bacteria. And it breeds at a much faster rate. So if disgusting bacteria infestation doesn’t gross you out, then I’m not sure what will 😉

Breakouts

Dirty brushes and sponges lead to breakouts! Simple as that. And if you think about your petri dish brushes in a new light, you can see how swiping that bacteria & dirt all over your face can be really bad for your skin. When you do that, it can trigger your skin to try and control the overloaded grossness by developing a rash & acne! If you happen to be noticing little bumps popping up in the same areas you use your dirty brushes, chances are it’s time for a good cleaning.

Irritation

Our skin reacts to stuff in a variety of ways. For me, my skin is super sensitive! Just like dirty brushes can cause acne, it can also cause major irritations in our skin. Cleaning brushes regularly can not only help keep the bristles soft, you’re also getting rid of any possibly irritants that breed on the brushes.

Poor Application

Not only can makeup brushes get dirty and stiff from lack of cleaning, you may also find that the overall application of the brushes has gone down the toilet. I was going to say sh*tter, but I decided toilet sounded more professional. If you’re finding that your brushes are producing streaky or uneven application, wash up!
